Frequently Asked Questions

Below you’ll find some of our most commonly asked questions and answers that will explain more about DataDot Technology. If you have a question not listed, please feel free to contact us at info@datadotdealerservices.com.

How are DataDots applied?
DataDots can be applied using an aerosol spray or brushed on with an applicator, depending on the item to be marked and the DataDot kit that is used. For complete details, please read our application instructions.
Can DataDots be applied to anything?
DataDots can be used to protect virtually any item of value. This includes larger items such as cars, boats and motorcycles, as well as cameras, computers, televisions, MP3 players and PDAs.
When should DataDots not be used?
DataDots should not be applied to animals, livestock or any item that will be subject to extreme heat, abrasion or constant rubbing.
Can DataDots be removed?
While the adhesive is still wet, DataDots can be removed with a water-dampened cloth. Once the adhesive dries and hardens, the dots can only be removed using abrasive measures such as high-powered sanding or acid. Due to this and the volume of DataDots applied to an item, DataDots-protected items are not a desirable option for thieves.
How long will DataDots last once applied to an item?
Based on projections, the application should last the life of an object. When subjected to endurance testing, DataDots have been found to resist heat, cold, humidity, common chemicals and salt mist.
When I buy a vehicle or other asset that has been protected by DataDots, do I have notify authorities that I am the new owner?
Usually not. In most regions, each DataDots system either carries a primary identifier (such as a Vehicle Identification Number or serial number) or a Personal Identification Number (PIN). PIN numbers are normally registered on our database with the asset's primary identification number. This is all the police need to establish who owns (or owned) the asset.
How are DataDots read by authorities?
Our company supplies law enforcement (on request) with special magnifiers to read the identifier that is coded on each DataDot. Some police also use black lights that cause the UV trace in the DataDot adhesive to glow and reveal the individual markers.
Why is registering my DataDots so important?
Registering your DataDots provides the link between the item and you as the owner. In the event of theft, police can read the unique code on the DataDot, go to the DataDot website, and link that number to you. Codes are simple and quick to register and can be submitted online, by fax or by mail.
Who has access to my registration information?
Police and insurers have access to this information via a secure password protected site. They have access only to your DataDot PIN code and the identifier you registered. For more information, please review our Privacy Policy.
What should I do if a DataDot-protected item is stolen?
First, contact your local police and provide them with your DataDot PIN code. You will be given a police crime report reference number to share with your insurer. Then, contact DataDot Dealer Services with these details, and we will update our database to list the item as stolen.
Should I notify my insurer that I have marked my property with DataDots?
Definitely as you may qualify for insurance discounts and incentives.
